Pharmacy services

From prescription to pharmacy, without the paper.

When your healthcare professional issues a digital prescription, DropDr carries it to the pharmacy you choose. You keep the choice of pharmacy; the pharmacy keeps control of dispensing.

Step by step

How the pharmacy pathway works

Five steps, with the clinical and commercial boundaries kept where the law puts them.

01

A professional issues a prescription

During or after your consultation, where the professional judges it clinically appropriate. The prescription is digital and carries a secure code.

02

You choose a pharmacy

Participating pharmacies appear with their location and hours. You select the one that suits you — DropDr does not choose for you.

03

The pharmacy receives the prescription

They see the medicine, dosage, quantity and prescriber details. They do not see your wider medical history.

04

The pharmacist checks and dispenses

If something needs clarifying, the pharmacist contacts the prescribing professional directly. Only the prescriber can change a prescription.

05

You collect or receive it

Collection or delivery, depending on what the pharmacy offers and what is appropriate for the medicine.

Where the money goes

DropDr never sells you medicine.

This matters more than it sounds. Under South African law, only a registered pharmacy may trade in medicine. DropDr is structured so that it never does.

  • Payment for medicine settles to the dispensing pharmacy
  • The applicable total is shown before payment is confirmed
  • DropDr holds no stock and takes no margin on medicine
  • You choose the pharmacy — no forced routing to a partner
  • The pharmacy remains responsible for dispensing decisions

Practical advantages

What a digital prescription gives you

Nothing to lose

No paper to misplace between the consultation and the counter.

Legible every time

No handwriting to interpret, which removes a whole category of dispensing error.

A record you keep

Your prescriptions stay in the app, so repeat requests start from fact rather than memory.

Direct prescriber contact

The pharmacist can reach the professional who wrote it, rather than guessing.

Stock visibility

Out-of-stock items are flagged before you travel, with a notify-me option.

Clear boundaries

Only the prescriber changes a prescription — protecting you from informal substitution.

Questions

About pharmacy services.

Visit the help centre
Does DropDr sell medicine?

No. DropDr is a technology platform, not a pharmacy. Medicine is dispensed and sold by the registered pharmacy you choose, and the payment for medicine goes to that pharmacy. DropDr connects the prescription to the pharmacy and keeps you informed.

Do I have to use a particular pharmacy?

No, and that is deliberate. You choose which participating pharmacy fulfils your prescription. DropDr does not route prescriptions to a preferred partner — the choice is a right, not a setting.

How does the pharmacy see my prescription?

A prescription issued in DropDr carries a secure code. The pharmacy scans or enters it and sees the medicine, dosage, quantity and the prescribing professional's details — not your wider medical history.

What if the medicine is out of stock?

The pharmacy can flag an item as unavailable, and you can ask to be notified when it is back. A pharmacist may also contact the prescribing professional to propose an alternative — but only the prescriber can change a prescription.

Can a pharmacist change my prescription?

No. A pharmacist can raise a concern or propose a substitution, but any change must be approved and made by the prescribing professional. That boundary exists to protect you.

Is delivery available?

Where a pharmacy offers delivery and it is appropriate for the medicine concerned. Some medicines have storage or scheduling requirements that make collection the safer route, and in those cases collection is what you will be offered.

DropDr is not an emergency service. If someone is seriously unwell or at risk, contact your local emergency provider immediately. Emergency information.
